If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, the Maine Domestic Violence Helpline at 1-866-834-4357 is available 24/7 and completely confidential. Trained advocates can help with safety planning, shelter, legal advocacy, and connecting you to your nearest program. Maine has nine regional domestic violence organizations, including Through These Doors serving the Portland area, Safe Voices in Lewiston/Auburn, and Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance in the Bangor region. All services are free, and you do not need to be in crisis to reach out.
Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence (MCEDV)
Maine's statewide 24/7 domestic violence helpline. Trained advocates provide crisis counseling, safety planning, emotional support, and referrals to local resource centers across all 16 counties. Deaf/HH: 1-800-437-1220.
Through These Doors
Cumberland County's domestic violence resource center providing emergency shelter (16 beds), advocacy, legal assistance, and support services. Operating since 1977 with three outreach offices across the county.
Safe Voices
The only shelter and support service for victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties. Offices in Farmington, Lewiston, Norway, and Rumford.
Partners for Peace
Comprehensive domestic violence services in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties. Formed from the merger of Spruce Run and Womancare Alliance. Provides shelter, transitional housing, legal advocacy, and children's services.
Hope and Justice Project
Serves Aroostook County with emergency shelters, transitional housing (up to 2 years), support groups, and advocacy. Supports approximately 1,000 victims per year across northern Maine.
NextStep Domestic Violence Project
Serves Hancock and Washington counties with a 24/7 helpline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal advocacy, and support groups for survivors of domestic violence in Downeast Maine.
New Hope Midcoast
Serves Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo counties with a 24/7 helpline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal services, support groups, and school-based education programs.
Caring Unlimited
York County's domestic violence resource center since 1977. Emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal advocacy, and support groups. Resource centers in Sanford, Biddeford, Kittery, and Waterboro.
Family Violence Project
Free, confidential domestic violence services in Kennebec and Somerset counties. Two emergency shelters, transitional housing (up to 2 years), legal advocacy, and support groups from offices in Augusta, Waterville, and Skowhegan.
MECASA
Statewide 24/7 sexual assault crisis helpline connecting callers with local advocates. Provides crisis counseling, medical advocacy, hospital accompaniment, and referrals. TTY: 1-888-458-5599.
Pine Tree Legal Assistance
Free civil legal aid for domestic violence survivors. Helps with protection from abuse orders, family law, and housing issues. 83% of victims represented by Pine Tree obtain a protective order vs. 32% without an attorney.
