Getting started.
Who this helps
People who meet the Town’s and state’s standards may qualify. The Town reviews household income and expenses. Applicants who are physically able must seek work.
How to get started
The administrator gives a decision sheet explaining whether you qualify and what you need to do for future help. If there is no immediate need, the administrator may require a workfare assignment before assistance is issued. Emergency assistance cannot be held until workfare is completed.
Schedule an appointment.
Call Freeport General Assistance at 207-865-4743 ext. 120 to schedule an appointment and ask what information to bring.
Get the application.
Pick up a Town of Freeport General Assistance application during regular business hours. Each person applying must complete one.
Submit during processing hours.
Bring the completed application and your records to 30 Main Street during application processing hours: Monday 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, or Wednesday or Thursday 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
How they can help.
The Town provides vouchers, not cash. Repeat applicants must use all available resources.
- Rent or mortgage
- Heating fuel
- Food
- Personal care and necessary household supplies
- Non-elective medical services
- Medically necessary telephone
- Necessary work-related expenses
A few questions before you go.
Have records showing who is in your household, household income, resources and assets, basic-needs expenses, and work-related expenses. If you cannot work, bring medical documentation about your work limits.
- Which expenses can qualify for help?
- Which records should my household bring?
- Can the program help with a necessary work expense?
- Could a work assignment affect when assistance is issued?
