Getting started.
Who this helps
People and families who live in Gardiner or South Gardiner may apply. People who plan to establish residency in Gardiner may also apply. The City considers households facing financial hardship caused by circumstances beyond their control.
How to get started
The City sets your assistance budget for the 30 days after you apply. It also reviews money received and spent during the 30 days before you applied.
Schedule an appointment.
Call the City’s General Assistance office at 207-530-0178 to arrange an appointment.
Complete the application.
Fill out the in-depth General Assistance Application linked on the City’s General Assistance page. Include details about your basic needs.
Bring proof of need.
Bring income records and documents showing your household expenses.
Provide missing proof.
If verification is missing at your appointment, the City delays its decision for 24 hours so you can provide it. If you cannot provide the needed documents, your request is denied.
How they can help.
The City provides temporary help when events beyond a household’s control cause financial hardship.

A few questions before you go.
