Getting started.
Who this helps
Scarborough children ages five through twenty who need special education and related services may qualify. In most cases, Section 504 applies when a student has a physical or mental disability that substantially limits a major life activity.
How to get started
The IEP team discusses evaluation results with the family, decides eligibility and services, and writes an IEP. The team reviews the IEP at least once a year. Eligible Section 504 students receive an annual Accommodation Plan with input from teachers, staff, parents, and the student.
Call Special Services.
Call Scarborough Public Schools Special Services at (207) 730-4130 to ask about screening, special education, or Section 504.
Take part in the process.
If your child is referred, take part in the individual evaluation and discuss the results with school staff and the IEP team.
Discuss Section 504.
If your child may qualify, ask the Special Services office about a Section 504 Accommodation Plan.
How they can help.
The district provides special education instruction and supportive services at no cost to parents. Eligible students may also receive a Section 504 Accommodation Plan.

A few questions before you go.
Check how the service works, when it is available, and any costs. Ask about communication or accessibility support if you need it.
- Could my child's school difficulties lead to an evaluation?
- What information should I have ready for the IEP team?
- How long does the evaluation process take?
