Getting started.
Who this helps
People who lack enough income or resources to meet their basic needs may qualify. The Town reviews each application under its General Assistance rules.
How to get started
The Town must give you a written decision within 24 hours of receiving your application.
Apply at Town Office.
The General Assistance notice says applications are taken Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and appointments are available Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. The Town Manager page lists different Wednesday General Assistance hours, 8:30 to 11:30 AM. Call 474-6900 to schedule an appointment or confirm hours before visiting.
Get emergency help.
If the office is closed and you have an emergency, call the Somerset County Communications Center at 474-6386. The Town keeps someone available 24 hours a day to take emergency applications.

A few questions before you go.
You may need proof of residency; income or pay records for everyone in the household; bank statements and receipts showing how income is spent; a lease; and bills for the costs you are asking about. Depending on your request, bring a signed eviction notice for an emergency, a prescription slip for medication help, or proof of a HEAP appointment for fuel help. Bring a doctor's statement if you need to be excused from workfare.
- Can I get help with housing, utilities or food?
- What papers should I bring for my request?
- How long might it take to get a decision?
- What can I do if I disagree with the decision?
