Who this helps
For SSDI: Workers who have paid Social Security taxes and have a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. For SSI: Individuals with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65+.
How to get started
Schedule an appointment by calling 800-772-1213. Many services are available online at ssa.gov. The disability application process typically takes 3-6 months for an initial decision.

What to have ready.
Photo ID, Social Security card, birth certificate, proof of citizenship or legal residency, medical records and doctor contact information, work history for the past 15 years, W-2 forms or tax returns.
