Getting started.
Who this helps
Windham residents who have trouble meeting basic needs may apply. The Town reviews household income and assets.
How to get started
The Town reviews the 30 days before your application and budgets for the 30 days after. It gives a written eligibility decision within 24 hours after you apply.
Schedule an appointment.
Call 207-892-1906 to make an appointment with the General Assistance Administrator. Applications are taken by appointment only.
Gather household records.
Before your appointment, gather records about household income, resources, assets, property, and expenses.
Attend an interview.
The Administrator interviews applicants in person before deciding unless that is impractical.
How they can help.
The Town runs the program through its General Assistance Administrator, who can connect applicants with other support services.
- Help with housing costs
- Help with utility bills
- Food assistance
- Fuel oil assistance
- Referrals to other support services
A few questions before you go.
Bring photo ID for household members over 18, Social Security cards for everyone in the household, lease or mortgage papers, recent bills or other expense records, proof of household income and assets, and records showing how money was spent in the past 30 days.
- Could this program help with an urgent household expense?
- Which household records should I bring?
- How soon will I know whether I qualify?
- Can the Administrator connect me with other services?
