Open to the general public. Adoption available to anyone who completes an application and meets adoption criteria. Pet food pantry available to community members who need help feeding their pets. The voucher program is on hold as of June 1, 2026. BHS will spay and return a mother cat or dog for a fee if her litter is surrendered to BHS.
How to get started
Visit during open hours to browse adoptable animals. Adoption counselors will help match you with a pet that fits your lifestyle. The adoption process includes an application and a conversation with staff. Call (207) 942-8902 before coming to discuss surrender; kennel space is limited.

Bangor's animal welfare movement began in 1869; the Bangor Humane Society was organized in 1882. Call before surrendering; kennel space is limited, and the shelter does not accept every species. The shelter sees nearly 2,000 dogs, cats, and small animals each year and helps homeless pets find new homes through adoption.
