LIHEAP fuel assistance and weatherization for Kennebec and Somerset county residents. One-time seasonal fuel payment plus emergency funds if you run out. Free weatherization upgrades to reduce energy costs long-term.

Who can use this?

LIHEAP: household income at or below 150% of Federal Poverty Level or 60% of State Median Income. Weatherization: income-eligible homeowners and renters in Kennebec or Somerset County. No asset limit.

Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (KVCAP) is the Community Action Agency serving Kennebec and Somerset counties. They administer LIHEAP fuel assistance, weatherization, transportation, Head Start, and other anti-poverty programs. KVCAP has served the region since 1965.

Services offered

  • LIHEAP fuel assistance: seasonal payment to your heating fuel vendor
  • Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP): emergency funds November through April
  • Weatherization Assistance Program: insulation, air sealing, and heating upgrades at no cost
  • Central Heating Improvement Program (CHIP): furnace/boiler repair or replacement
  • Home energy audits and efficiency education

What to expect

Call 1-800-542-8227 to schedule a fuel assistance appointment. You'll meet with a caseworker who reviews your documents and determines your benefit amount. Payment goes directly to your fuel vendor. For weatherization, you'll be placed on a waitlist for a home energy audit.

What to bring

Photo ID, Social Security cards for all household members, proof of income for previous 3 months, most recent electric bill, and proof of address.
