Getting started.
Who this helps
Old Town residents may qualify if they have no other resources and their household income is below the state maximum for the area and household size. Unemployed or underemployed people who can work must register with Maine Job Service, look for work, and accept job offers. They must also take referred no-cost training and accept a City work assignment if assigned.
How to get started
The City must issue a written decision within 24 hours. If approved, assistance may cover a period of up to one month.
Call for an appointment.
Call (207) 827-3965, extension 107, Tuesday or Thursday between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Apply in person.
Apply at the General Assistance office. If a special reason prevents you from applying in person, the City may take your application by phone.
How they can help.
The program can help with current bills, but it does not pay past-due bills.
- Rent or mortgage
- Heating fuel and utilities
- Food
- Medical care and prescriptions
A few questions before you go.
Bring identification and Social Security cards for everyone in your household, your DHHS benefit letter, proof of income, recent bills and receipts for rent or mortgage, heating fuel, electricity, food, and medical costs, a 30-day bank statement, and your landlord’s name and address. If you are ill, disabled, or unable to work, bring a doctor’s statement. Repeat applicants should also bring records showing how they spent income during the past 30 days.
- Could General Assistance help with my current bill?
- How do the work rules affect my eligibility?
- What documents should I bring?
- When will I hear the decision?
